A handpiece that has lost torque, started screaming, or stopped gripping the bur is not just an annoyance. It slows every procedure and, left alone, turns a cartridge replacement into a head replacement. EZ Smile Manufacturing Group repairs high-speed and low-speed dental handpieces for clinics across Metro Vancouver and the Lower Mainland.
Symptoms we see most often
- Loss of power or torque under load
- Loud whine, grinding or rattling from the head
- Chuck or push-button not gripping the bur securely
- Bur wobble or visible play in the head
- Running hot during use
- Water spray blocked, misaligned or dripping after shutdown
- Dim or dead fibre optic light
- Air leaking from the coupling or hose connection
- Slow spin-down or failure to stop cleanly
What repair usually involves
Most high-speed faults trace back to the turbine cartridge, its bearings and o-rings. Most low-speed faults come from worn gears, bearings or seals in the motor or contra-angle head. We assess the handpiece, identify whether it is a cartridge, chuck, bearing, seal or optic problem, and tell you what the repair costs before proceeding.
Where the economics do not work, we will say so. A handpiece that needs a new head, new optics and a new chuck is often worth replacing rather than rebuilding, and we would rather tell you that than hand you an invoice you resent.
All makes and models
We work on all major handpiece brands used in Canadian dental practices: high-speed air turbines, electric and air-driven low-speed motors, contra-angles, straight handpieces and prophy angles, with or without fibre optics.
Turnaround
Common repairs using stocked parts are quick. Where a model-specific cartridge or component has to be ordered, expect around two weeks, depending on what the manufacturer and its distributors hold in Canada. You will be given the expected timeline before the repair is authorised.
Keeping handpieces out of the repair queue
Most premature handpiece failures come down to three things: lubricating incorrectly or not at all, autoclaving without purging, and running a chuck that is already worn. If several handpieces in your practice are failing the same way, the cause is usually process rather than product, and it is worth an hour of a technician’s time to find it. Ask about preventive maintenance.
